As a student Dr. Simmons was selected to the Gold Key Optometric Honor Society. Recognized as the highest honor for leadership a student of optometry can achieve, selection to the society is based on leadership, scholarship, and value to the class, college, and profession.

In April 2016 Dr. Simmons received the GPLI Contact Lens Clinical Excellence Award as well as the James and Patricia Short Fellowship award.

In June 2017 Dr. Simmons was selected as the Utah Young Optometrist of the Year due to his contributions to the profession locally and the clinical care of his patients.
